What made you sign up for your first open water swim?

I like to do triathlons but was limited in the distance I could enter due to my poor swimming. Growing up in Scotland, I only learned freestyle a couple of years ago and by December 2015 I had only swum 300 metres in the ocean. My goal was to do an Olympic distance triathlon – which meant a 1.5k open water swim [which at the time seemed a HUGE challenge]!.  I knew I had until April to become confident over that distance in the ocean. I started with a 400.

 

Favourite swimming memory?

Hard choice – swimming the Coogee jetty to jetty and seeing the gorgeous Leuwin tall ship every time I breathed to the right…&….treading water at the deep water start of the Olympic distance tri in April – feeling confident that I could do the distance  [albeit slowly!!] – and knowing that was because I’d focused on open water swimming over the summer.  It was a lovely, lovely feeling.

 

What are you looking forward to in the upcoming season?

Going faster than last year; and maybe further.

Both

 

What’s your favourite hobby outside of swimming?

Triathlons

 

What do you do to relax?  

Take “Razz” the Kelpie to the beach.

 

What’s been your biggest challenge with open water? 

Learning to do freestyle

 

What are your goals with open water? 

Busselton jetty swim 2017, and maybe someday, in a few years, the Rotto swim!

 

How do you prepare for open water swims? 

Train in the pool and at Coogee inside the shark barrier.
